In the course “Face Rigging for Beginners,” you will learn how to create a basic but fully functional face rigging using joints in Maya. This technique can also be applied to real-time and game engines. The course will take you step-by-step through setting up the initial joints, weight painting, and finalizing the rig. You will learn how to create the main rig structure, rig the mouth, eyes, eyebrows, and more. By the end of the course, you will have the skills to create your own simple yet effective face rig and have a strong understanding of how rigging works when using joints. This course is ideal for those who are already familiar with Maya but new to rigging and will serve as a foundation for more advanced face rigging in production.

Jose Antonio Martin, your instructor for this course, is an accomplished Senior and Lead Rigger with over a decade of experience in the film industry. He has contributed to rigging several high-profile films, including Ghost In The Shell, Suicide Squad, and Gravity, working at renowned studios such as MPC, Framestore, and ILM. He has extensive experience creating some of the most advanced face rigs in the industry, including the photo-realistic Arnold Schwarzenegger digital double from Terminator Genisys. Additionally, he has experience as a teacher, having taught at CGMA and Domestika.

This course provides an overview of the face rigging process, including:

Introduction: Basic knowledge of facial expressions and facial topology. Main Structure: Setting up the main structure of the face rig, including the neck and head, jaw joints, and controls for driving the joints. Mouth Setup: Simple but versatile mouth rigging to create various shapes around the mouth and lips. Other Elements: Adding joints and controls for other facial features such as ears, cheeks, nose, gums/teeth, and tongue. Eyes: Setting up the eyes, including lookAt controls and eyelid rigging. Eyebrows: Simple rigging for the eyebrows to pose for different expressions. Final Steps: Cleaning up and finalizing the rig, testing it with animation, and testing it on game engines.
