Methodology and Conceptualisation for Designing Characters (Spanish, Multisub)

Research, illustrate and present your character ideas Designing a character is a broad concept and goes beyond just the illustration process. Character design starts long before you think about putting pencil to paper; there is a process of conceptualization in order to design everything that surrounds your character. Jordi Ros, Mexican illustrator and designer, knows this process inside and out and will share his expertise with you in this course.

You will learn to design characters: from the ideation of a solid concept to the illustration. Then you will learn how to best to present it for personal or professional projects. You will develop a complete, but flexible, methodology focused on the design of characters in any of its applications: animation shorts, comics and even collectible figures.

What will you learn in this online course? You will begin by getting to know Jordi Ros’ work, his professional career and his influences in the field of characters design.

You will learn the process of pre-design; researching and drafting (the most important professional pairing behind all of your work) to create moodboards with an organized and structured layout in order to create characters.

Then you will create the basis of your character: a template in which you can reiterate and change depending on the action and situation in which you are in. This will help you to streamline the design process.

Jordi will show you how to adapt your characters, and all the content generated around them, into a professional presentation format with descriptions, annotations and graphic design elements that will help your character come alive.

What is this course’s project? You will design a character from a predefined concept by Jordi or, if you wish, on your own.

Who is this online course for? For designers, illustrators, cartoonists or anyone with an interest in the conceptualization and design of characters for commercial or personal purposes.

Requirements and materials It’s recommended to have a previous knowledge of drawing, as well as have had previously used some type of image editing software.

The techniques and methodologies applied by Jordi in this course are applicable to any medium and you can use his techniques to create characters digitally or by hand.

With respect to materials, you will need a computer or a tablet. Jordi uses Procreate on his iPad, but you can use any software that best suits your abilities.
